After inaugurating the first nuclear reactor installation (out of two) of the Rooppur plant, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina confirmed the determination to acquire another nuclear power plant, to decisively secure electricity production needed for the people well-being and economic development.
Originally the first reactor of the Rooppur plant was scheduled to be operational in 2024 and the second one in 2025.
Thanks to the 20,000 skilled workers and the supervision of Russian “Rosatom”, the first reactor will start producing electricity in 2023 and the second one six to eight months after.
At 160 km northwest of the capital Dhaka, the Rooppur plant enabled new categories of local skilled workers and experts to train, build, operate, and maintain nation’s first nuclear reactor, paving the way for a quicker and more efficient second nuclear power plant in the south of the country.
Producing today 25,000 MW without nuclear plants (from 4,900 MW in 2009), Bangladesh needs to produce 60,000 MW by 2041 to keep the current economic development rhythm and achieve the status of a developed country.
Being satisfied with Russian “Rosatom”, the Prime Minister seems to favor deepening relations with them and have them build the second nuclear power plant.
Nonetheless, it didn’t stop several countries to express interest in providing Bangladesh nuclear energy generation.
South Korea ambassador voiced his convictions that Korean companies would be more than happy to assist Bangladesh access their technology. Adding that economic ties between the two countries are strong, in the Ready-Made Garment sector but also in high tech, mentioning Samsung R&D Institute operates in Dhaka since 2011, employing 460 software developers, or the recently inaugurated USD 200 million 100-acre Hi-Tech Park within the “Korea Export Processing Zone” (the KEPZ employs 25,000 local workers in 60 factories on 650,000 m2).
