Bangladesh's largest solar power plant gets the green light.
Electricity production: from quantity to quality.
NEWSBANGLADESH NEWS
Beginning of October saw Beximco get from the authorities the green light to build Bangladesh’s largest solar power plant. This project of 280 megawatts at a cost of USD 200 million should be operational by mid 2022
Five power plants (4 new and 1 upgraded) were inaugurated on September 12th for a combined 779 megawatts production, bringing the electricity generation capacity at over 25,000 MW (equivalent to 25 nuclear plant reactors).
Since 2009 119 power plants were constructed for a total capacity of 20,000 MW (4,900 MW in 2009), at the time the per capita electricity generation was only 220 kWh and reaches today 560 kWh.
It’s easy then to understand that the priority was to produce capacity, if possible cheap, but fast to meet the growing economy need for energy.
Now Bangladesh is in a phase where it can more easily diversify its source of energy, and focus more on solar, wind and hydro production of electricity.
