After a halt in the project due to the pandemic, work is well under way for Dhaka’s metro to be inaugurated for December 2022.

The first train sets delivered by Kawasaki Heavy Industries arrived from Japan in April 2021, nine sets (each comprising six air-conditioned coaches). A total of 144 coaches in 24 train sets will operate the 21 km long route (MRT-6). Five other routes are planned to be constructed by 2030, for a total length of 129 km.

MRT-6 will serve 60,000 passengers per hour at a speed of 100 km/h with wait times of 4 minutes.

MRT-6 was financed by Bangladeshi government at 25% and 75% by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) at a 0.01% annual interest rate payable within 40 years, with a grace period of 10 years.

In addition to those already approved projects, a feasibility study for an 81 km railway around Dhaka was completed in January 2021, and the preliminary project is underway.

This USD 8.4 billion project will integrate with the MRT system and help reduce Dhaka’s traffic congestion (average speed of vehicles during rush hours is 5 km/h).
